What to See on Your Holidays in Botswana

With an economy closely tied to South Africa’s mining, tourism and cattle, the Republic of Botswana is predominantly flat. It is home to vast number of national parks and game reserves and has an abundance of wildlife and wetlands. Formerly a protectorate of Britain, it is bordered by South Africa in the south and south east, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the north east.

Tourism plays a major role in the country’s economy. One of the main safari destinations in Africa, Botswana is the location of the 1980 movie The Gods Must be Crazy. The most popular sport in Botswana is football and it is an associate member of International Cricket council.

Botswana is known to have one of the lowest population densities in the world. With strict tourism policies, the wilderness has always been an attraction to many foreigners. The Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe National Park are home to various wildlife including lions, brown hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs, and antelope. These herds of wildlife are found roaming around the country, mostly in the northern tourist areas. The country is also known to have the largest population of elephants in the world.

Remember the Kalahari? Well the Kalahari Desert covers most of Botswana in a stretch of wind-blown sand and is the home of many adaptive creatures. Yes, the word desert is a misnomer as the Kalahari is covered with vegetation and grassland. In the middle of the desert is the world’s largest inland delta, the Okavango is a labyrinth of lagoons and lakes and is a magnet for different animals needing water. An ancient super lake, the Makgadikgadi covers an area almost as large as Portugal. During the rainy season, this lake is filled with water to the brim and becomes a temporary home for different kinds of birds and wildlife. The area around the Kalahari has a number of safari lodges and camps so visitors can experience that authentic South African adventure. The lush forests and delta house more than 400 species of birds and is considered a bird lovers paradise, during the rainy season, migratory birds add to the colourful spectacle.

Botswana also has a rich culture and history, the centre of literature and the visual arts. Found in the west of the Okavango delta is the richest rock art site in the whole of South Africa, also known as the Tsodilo Hills. This is a sacred site from the Stone Age and is filled with numerous myths and legends.

Unlike its neighbouring countries, Botswana is relatively more peaceful and secure. It is now the top destination for holidays, vacations and outdoor adventures. The people are hospitable, passive and content, and as more communities prosper, tourism is becoming more widespread. Tourism brings the largest revenue to the country.

If you are looking for a South African adventure, Botswana is the best place for you. It is the gateway to the worlds most magnificent creatures and a storehouse of wondrous landscape

Manchester City Defeat United And Top The Premier League

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 victory over rivals Manchester United and with only two games remaining this season, the title is now theirs to lose.

City captain Vincent Kompany was on hand to head the vital goal for the blues at the end of the first half, which means that City are now level with United on 83 points and have a superior goal difference. which should be enough to seal the title if City win their two remaining games. United had an eight point advantage just three weeks ago, but last nights defeat, in addition to a surprising defeat at Wigan and a 4-4 draw at home to Everton, has seen the advantage nullified and City on the brink of their first league title since 1968.

City who went into the game three points adrift of the reigning champions needed to win the game while a draw for United would probably have been enough to secure a 20th league title for the Old Trafford side.

In a game of few chances, City looked the more positive team form the outset, while United had set up a defensive team and chosen to play Wayne Rooney as a lone striker and he looked isolated as a result, in a game where the Reds hardly threatened to score. The game had been billed as the biggest in the history of the Premier League, but largely failed to live up to the expectations of a classic encounter.

In a dramatic turn of events Manchester United have only taken four points from the last available twelve, which is even more surprising as the Reds are historically so clinical at this stage of the season. City now face an away game at Newcastle, where victory is far from inevitable and then a home game against Premier League strugglers Queens Park Rangers. The Reds face Swansea at home and finish with an away game at Sunderland, but even victory in those to games may not be enough to retain their title as City have a superior goal difference of eight goals.

United’s defensive approach to the game frustrated City early on, with the home sides best chances falling to Sergio Aguero, but both of his early efforts were off target. The Blues were looking the much stronger team toward half time and their efforts were finally rewarded when David Silva’s corner was met by Kompany who headed the ball into the goal past United keeper David de Gea.

Manchester City are undefeated at home this season having won seventeen and drawn one of their eighteen

Premier League games at the Etihad Stadium this season. The Blues now stand on the brink of their first League title for over forty years, a feat which looked impossible just a few weeks ago.

Champions League – Barcelona Beat Ten Man Arsenal

Arsenal fell short at the Nou Camp as they lost again to Barcelona and made an early exit form the Champions League at the last sixteen stage. Despite having a creditable 2-1 lead from the first leg, the odds were probably stacked against them even before the kick off, as the faced the Spanish Champions who are currently ten points ahead of nearest rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga table.

As expected, Barcelona dominated the game from the first kick off and it was obvious the Gunners defence would be hard pushed to preserve their first leg lead. Arsenal defended well but their inability to create dominate possession and create opportunities of their own was an open invitation for their hosts to mount attack after attack.

The fact that Barca were limited to Adriano hitting the crossbar with a shot and Messi wasting a good opportunity but then shooting straight at Almunia, is a credit to Arsenal’s determination in defence as most of the hosts attacks were cut short or they were limited to speculative efforts. As half time approached it looked like the game would remain goalless and the Gunners would preserve their first leg lead.

The turning point in the game came three minutes into injury time in the first half as Csec Fabregas inexplicably attempted a back heel pass which gave the ball away and Messi neatly chipped the ball over Almunia and into the Arsenal goal, which level the aggregate scores but gave Barcelona the advantage having scored an away goal at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal surprisingly regained the upper hand in the 53rd minute when Busquets inadvertently headed the ball into his own goal following a corner, but they suffered a further setback when Van Persie, who had been booked for a previous foul, was given a second yellow card after attempting a shot at goal after the referee had blown his whistle. Despite their protests at the decision to send him off, the Gunners were now reduced to ten men and braced themselves for the Barcelona onslaught.

It wasn’t long before Barcelona capitalised on their numerical advantage as Xavi scored ion the 69th minute before Messi scored his second of the game two minutes later from the penalty spot after Pedro was fouled.

Credit must go to Almunia in the Arsenal goal as he produced a string of fine saves to keep the score line respectable, as the Gunners began to capitulate. Nicklas Bendtner, however, wasted an opportunity to score a late goal that would have seen the visitors through on the away goals rule, but the 3-1 victory on the night was enough to see Barcelona through to the next round as they won 4-3 on aggregate over the two games.
