Different Editions of the Same Magazine in Different Countries

One thing that travelers often remark about when they return from other countries is that the magazines they are accustomed to reading at home are different in other locations. For instance, the same issue of Time, Newsweek, or People that is read in New York will not only have a different language in Mexico City, it may also have much different content – but still have the same basic cover. What publications often do is to create one basic issue for their main readership, and then tweak that concept in order to sell it with more local content, in other regions. So People Magazine, for instance, might have the same basic layout in two different countries but the television related articles in Mexico will be about Mexican soap stars, while the New York issue will be the people acting in daytime dramas that are more well known in the USA.

Similarly, sports magazines in the Southern Hemisphere may have a heavier concentration of articles about soccer, whereas in the USA they might emphasize American football or hockey. And the same goes for other subjects such as politics and business. Open a newsmagazine in Europe and you’ll find less news about the USA, even if the magazine is based in and printed in the USA.

Another difference is, of course, the language itself. Many magazines will publish a bi-lingual edition of a magazine, with one language on the right side of the page and another language on the left side of the magazine. Or they will print different language editions, instead of bi-lingual editions, for different markets. They might do an issue in the USA in English, but then have the same content translated into several other languages for sale in other parts of the world.

For an inexpensive but interesting travel souvenir, try picking up unique and curious copies of magazines that are special foreign versions of the ones you and your friends read back home. Maybe you can find a National Geographic in Dutch, an Esquire or GQ in French, or your favorite kid’s magazines in Spanish. Not only are they fun to show to people, they can make your language studies even more fun as you try to translate your magazines accurately. They are easy to pack in your baggage, don’t cost much, and are a simple item you can even pick up in the airport at the last minute.

BARCELONA SIGNs LIONEL MESSI! THIS TRANSFER FINALLY WILL HAPPEN!

BARCELONA SIGNs LIONEL MESSI! THIS TRANSFER FINALLY WILL HAPPEN!

BARCA ANNOUNCES THE SIGNING OF MESSI TODAY!?
Mundo Deportivo; Gerard Romero

And where could we end up without updates on the situation with Lionel Messi? Our updates are very promising! Mundo Deportivo announces that BARCELONA MAY ANNOUNCE THE SIGNING OF A NEW CONTRACT WITH MESSI JUST TODAY! Or, at last, tomorrow … According to many reputable Catalan journalists, Leo will agree on a 5-year contract worth 200 million euros! Not bad! But it should be kept in mind that the Argentinian’s salary will be 20 million euros after taxes. Therefore, a huge respect to Leo! He went to a decrease in salary for the sake of his club! For the Catalans to be able to register Messi, three things need to happen:
1. the sale of Braithwaite for at least 15 million euros;
2. getting rid of Pjanic and Umtiti;
3. Pique, Alba, Busquets and Roberto are still to agree on lowering their salary.
Barça management is thinking of Messi finally joining the roster in the next campaign!

Are We Living Beyond Our Means?

The state of the economy affects the state of the property market, both directly (sales prices) and indirectly (difficult loans). Without being necessarily experts on the economy, we understand that the way out of the prevailing situation is to encourage development and business expansion, to add confidence to those daring investors, especially those involved in large projects and reduce bureaucracy. We will also add that we need some sort of «economy patriotism» by all of us, so the individual «sacrifice» large or small can benefit the whole country.

As we have noted extreme measures do not rally the patriotic feeling that we need (see Greece with the bombing reactions etc and more recently in France with the pension proposals).

Our Government, we cannot say, it gets top marks in its economy administration. This Government has inherited from the previous Government €½ bil. excess and over the 2 years of its governance, it has managed to spend it all and borrow another €1½ bil. Economic reports including that of the E.U. and the Governor of the Central Bank encourages this Government to cut down spending with the primary consideration the wage bill of the civil service. Yet, whereas the civil service accepts a reduction of salaries for all incoming wages for new incoming staff, this Government does not agree with (civil servants get approximately 1.75 time more than equivalent jobs in the private practice) and all this, notwithstanding the fact that the opposing parties agree with the reduction!! Governmental spending includes also projects that are not necessary those which will help the Cyprus economy over the immediate future. The Culture Center (which will cost around €100 mil.) is an example, as is the new Pafos-Polis road (notwithstanding the fact that we are all for it, it could be postponed by 1-1½ years), the Akamas national park (estimated cost over €250 mil.) and various smaller but numerous «voting chasers projects» which amount to €15-€20 mil.

As if all these were not enough, we have a situation with the Qatar investment, which could amount to over €150 mil. upfront cash, plus the remaining fringe benefits from this 55.000 sq.mts. development (including the establishment of a business hub for the gulf states and emirates). Our experience so far is that opposing politicians will do just about everything to cancel the project regardless, various professionals emanating purely from own promotion/jealousy etc have adopted a small-mindness approach and no one is considering what the affects will be if the Qatar fund pulls out and the «message» that this will be passed on to international investors (we have invited as Government the Qatar fund to invest and then we said no!!).

The very bad handling of Eurocypria airline, which is shutting down at a cost of €50 mil. (the damage to Cyprus tourism apart), is an addition of the whole very bad situation.

Another aspect, not directly related to the economy, but related to real estate sales abroad, is the level of security. The level of individual security’s feeling is falling, but still it has retained its European 3rd best secured position, because the other countries are also having a deteriorating situation. Handbag thefts are increasing, organized crime (relating to prostitution and gambling) is increasing and problematic/violent behavior (see football matches) is the ordinary situation. Yet the Chief of Police complain that 25% of the newcomers police officers are women and that % is increasing fast and his suggestion to have a women’s quota has been rejected (a huge mistake), so in a few years who is going to handle the night policing, the drags raids and football hooligans?

These are some of the points that trouble us and we wanted to share our thoughts with you. The economy and its prospects depend on many factors, local and international, but may be at the end of the day, we, as Cypriots, sit back and relax like nothing is happening, driving a car down hill with increasing speed? Should the economy not be above political ambitions and should we not ask politicians to project themselves for the benefit of the economy of the country?

MESSI WINS THE BALLON D'OR-2021!

MESSI WINS THE BALLON D’OR-2021!

MESSI IS A FAVOURITE TO WIN THE BALLON D’OR!
France Football

Lionel Messi is the favourite for the 2021 Ballon d’Or award. This information was leaked to the media by one of the journalists of France Football, and that magazine is, by the way, the organiser of the award. The authoritative Barcelona journalist Francesc Aguilar also confirms this information. Messi is in the first place among all bookmakers – he is ahead of Lewandowski, Jorginho, Kante, Mbappe and Ronaldo in this race. France Football has already interviewed Messi and this is another argument that speaks in favour of Lionel. It seems that Leo’s 7th Ballon D’Or is around the corner! What do you think?

Mums And Dads ‘Feel The Pinch’ Of Extra Curricular Activities

Parents may find pressure on their finances is being compounded due to the cost of funding their child’s extra curricular activities, new figures indicate.

Research carried out by Alliance & Leicester suggests that as schoolchildren across Britain return to the classroom for the start of the new term, their mothers and fathers could well find that their ability to manage their money is squeezed due to the expenses of various out of hours pursuits such as music and sport.

According to the financial services firm, the love of the sport could see football-mad children pressurising their parents’ capacity to handle areas of their finances such as mortgages, utility bills and personal loans. Those looking to get the latest kit for their soccer-loving offspring could be set back by up to 115 pounds. Meanwhile, with 40 pounds the average cost of joining an after-school football team, as well as transport expenses for going to and from training and matches, consumers may well «soon see the bills mounting up». Overall, the sport was said be costing parents throughout the country 314 million pounds every year.

The study also showed that children looking for a career in classical music could well be putting financial strain on their loved ones. A violin starter pack costs some 79 pounds, while this expense rises to 199 pounds for a beginner’s clarinet set. In addition tuition classes are revealed to stand at 20 pounds an hour. Meanwhile, the parents of budding Kylie Minogues and Robbie Williams could be set to pay up to 35 pounds per hour for a private singing lesson, as music lessons set the nation back a total of 3 billion pounds.

Ross Dalzell, manager for savings for Alliance & Leicester, said: «Of course, every parent wants their child to be able to take part in extra-curricular activities on offer inside and outside of school and to support their every ambition. But costs will mount up on top of the price of compulsory uniforms, school dinners and school trips. Parents will feel the pinch if they have not made financial provision for their child’s extra-curricular activities; especially if they have more than one child at school, or if their child takes part in more than one activity.»

Mr Dalzell suggested that by regularly saving money consumers «can easily build up to eliminate stress and absorb these additional costs». He added that Britons may also wish to use money received from a payrise or bonus as a way of easing such pressure on their finances.

For those struggling to supplement the various costs of their child’s activities, a low-rate personal loan may well be an advisable option. In July, research conducted by the Alliance Trust Research Centre showed that a growing number of British families «continue to borrow big and spend bigger» despite increasing pressure being placed on them by rising utility bills and a slow in real earnings growth. Commenting on the study, Shona Dobbie, head of the firm, said: «Far from never having it so good, we’ve seldom had it so bad, with homes squeezed by lower earnings growth, higher mortgage repayments and chronic council taxes, to name just a handful of issues.»

MESSI WILL LIVE IN A CASTLE IN PARIS!

MESSI WILL LIVE IN A CASTLE IN PARIS!

MESSI TO MOVE INTO A CASTLE?
Sportbible

Messi could move into a castle close to Paris! Currently, Leo’s family lives in the Royal Monceau Hotel, and the Argentine’s wife Antonella has narrowed the search for the perfect home during a business trip to France. She got her eyes on the castle worth 41 million pounds at Sotheby’s auction. The opulent castle, constructed in 1899, boasts 30 huge rooms, not to mention an indoor pool, home theatre and gym, as well as a personal squash court. In addition, there are garages and staff quarters on the territory. Antonella already examined the castle and she was pleased with what she saw! Leo himself, who still didn’t visit the castle, is yet to make the final decision… This castle is located just 15 minutes from the club’s training ground. Former French President Charles de Gaulle once stayed at this place for three days in 1940 during World War II…
